In this 10-week writing and performing arts course, students ages 12-14 from the Bronzeville area will practice vocal performance, writing, and directing skills by re-enacting, re-writing, and re-imagining famous speeches of civil rights activists, artists, musicians, and other influential figures from the movement against mass incarceration. By playing with context and delivery, students will find evocative and meaningful ways to bring historical words into the present moment.

Course text: The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander.
